Kudzu Kids for Kids Program

We Promote Disease Free Dairy Goats

The intent of this program is to encourage children in Georgia to become involved with Diary Goats by offering sound, disease free animals under the supervision of a mentor.

This program is named “Kudzu Kids for Kids” in memory of Sidney Bledsoe, a founding member of the GDGBA, and owner of Kudzu Corners Saanens and Goat Dairy.

The program is to run as follows:

A Doe Kid is to be “donated” (intended) by a Donor and given to a qualifying child. This doe is to be bred no earlier than 8 months (75 lbs.) of age. A doe kid resulting from this breeding is to be returned to the program to be donated to another qualifying child and the process is started again. You must notify the coordinator upon breeding your doe to keep this program going.

Definitions:

Doe Kid – ADGA registered doe kids (under 6 months of age) of any breed (including grades) may be donated. It must be free of CAE (as tested by Washington State diagnostic lab), CL and sore mouth. The doe should be vaccinated for Clostridium Perfringens types C&D, tetanus and dewormed. If the doe is bred and does not produce a live birth or a doe kid after two consecutive breeding seasons, there is no obligation to return a doe kid to the program and the $75.00 deposit will be returned. Once a doe kid is received, it becomes the property of the child and cannot be returned to the program to reclaim the $75.00 deposit. Neither the club nor the Donors are responsible for unwanted animals. Unwanted animals may be offered for sale.

Donor – A member of the club who donates or intends to donate (if the animal is not born yet), a doe kid. A donor is not obligated to be a mentor nor are they obligated to take back unwanted animals.
Qualifying Child – Any child between the age of 9 and 18 years of age that resides in the State of Georgia and whose family does not own a registered dairy goat. This child must also have a mentor. A $75.00 deposit is to be presented to the club by the qualifying child before receiving the doe kid. The qualifying child must also join the GDGBA (dues $10.00/year), attend at least two GDGBA meetings per year and one sanctioned dairy goat show or compete in a 4-H or FFA competition. The qualifying child is also given the book “Your Goats – A kids guide to raising and showing” (which is donated by Kay James, Yellow Rose Farm).

Mentor – A member of the GDGBA in good standing for at least three years, who volunteers to provide support in the form of animal husbandry knowledge to the qualifying child. A mentor is responsible for monitoring the welfare of the doe kid (and offspring) for at least one year. A mentor may not sponsor more than five children at any one time. It is preferred that mentors live close by their sponsored children.

$75.00 deposit – This deposit is to be paid before a doe kid is received and will be returned on return of a doe kid to the program. If there is a shortage of donated doe kids, this $75.00 deposit will be returned to those not receiving a doe kid. If a doe kid dies, the $75.00 deposit is not refunded (unless the mentor determines the death to be due to a genetic defect).

Note from Coordinator
Coming to our meetings gives you the opportunity to ask questions, and to learn from other goat owners who are experienced in raising dairy goats. We feel that keeping a record of your goat’s health is important. Please fill out the application form and lets get started.

We want this experience to be a pleasant one with you and your dairy goat. Just remember that goats give life, but we must learn how to care for them and provide the diary goats with what they need to insure their longevity. Please feel free to call me about any questions you may have.

Book
Your Goats – A kids guide to raising and showing

The more you learn about raising dairy goats the better chance you have at successfully raising your Kudzu Kids for Kids Doe. We, the GDGBA, encourage you to learn all you can.
