There’s more than one way to skin a cat and there’s also more than one way to promote dairy goats. Lets have a look at some of them:
4-H is great way to promote dairy goats. Most children will really take a shine to them, especially if the are young kid goats. This is because younger goats are easer to handle and are much more energetic and fun to watch than the older does. One way my family helps promote dairy goats is we have an annual 4-LI "Farm Day." During the summer we let a 4-H group come out to our farm and we teach them a little about our dairy goats, horses, mules, and bees and what it takes to run a farm.
We also show them how to make cheese, and then let them taste it. We then showed them how we make goat milk soap. We let them feed some kid goats and of course, we let them milk! One important thing you must remember is children need a lot of hands-on experience to really get interested, so you can forget giving them a whole long spill. What they want to do is milk goats and play with the kid goats.
There are dozens of other ways to promote the goat through 4-H. One thing that you might consider is to start a local 4-H Dairy Goat Club or maybe you might write an article for your 4-H newsletter.
Making tours of the public school system is another way to promote the goat. Our local elementary schools have "Farm Days" - that is when local farmers and livestock owners bring some of their livestock to the school. A lot of urban kids have never seen goats or any other type of livestock up close. So, a hands-on experience is great for them.
One really great way to get information about dairy goats out in the open is thru a local newspaper. You can write articles for your newspaper. This not only educates people about goats, but it also promotes your farm and in turn might bring you some extra dairy sales.
County fairs and local events are another way to help promote the goat and maybe bring you some profit by selling soap or other goat related products, it also helps to promote your farm. However you usually have to rent a booth at the fair, but, it will be well worth it in the end.
Well what did I tell you? There is more than one way to skin a cat! And there are countless other ways to promote your favorite animal. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and promote the goat!
