Announcing: GDGBA’s New Production Awards and Linear Appraisal Recognition

The Georgia Dairy Goat Breeders Association will, beginning in 2008, recognize the outstanding animals owned by its members. We would like to honor the animals that in 2007 gave performance worthy of merit. This will include all does and bucks appraising 90 or higher overall, as well as standard breed does milking 3000 lbs or more or Nigerians milking 1200 lbs or more. We would also like to recognize the highest producing doe of each breed with a special award to be presented at the Georgia Dairy Goat Breeders Spring Show. With the understanding that not all herds have the ability to participate in regular DHI testing, we will also recognize the doe of each breed with the highest score on a One Day Milk Test or Milking Competition.
The full registered name of all animals meeting one or more of the criteria listed above will be printed in the GDGBA newsletter along with the owner and breeders name(s) and the record of merit. This is a great opportunity for free advertising of the hard work that you have put into producing high quality animals. Georgia goat owners and breeders have contributed much to the development of better dairy goats, and it is time that everyone sees just how many great goats we have in Georgia.

Press Release 11/02/2007

Irvin deletes dye from pet food proposal
Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has announced that he is dropping the proposal to add dye to raw milk sold as pet food. The addition of dye was proposed as a possible amendment to the rules relating to Georgia Feed Laws and was intended to prevent any confusion between milk sold for human consumption with that sold for animal consumption.

“There is an overwhelming consensus that labeling will be sufficient for consumers to tell the difference between the two kinds of milk. We will delete the dye proposal and concentrate on labeling. Everyone seems to support having clear, recognizable labeling. We will re-publish the proposed rule changes and hold another hearing in order to receive public comments,” said Irvin.

A pre-hearing on the proposed rule changes was held this morning at the State Farmers Market in Atlanta. Approximately 160-170 people attended and approximately 50 people spoke. All spoke against the addition of dye.
